What is a “hejnał?” The word is pronounced like “hey now”, which is important in the context of this story. The boys go to Polish school on Saturday mornings. In one of their classes the teacher asked for the meaning of the word hejnał. Given how the word is pronounced, most of the class readily started singing the refrain of “All Star” by Smash Mouth.
The teacher apparently was not too happy with that answer. For those of you who don’t know the correct answer, “hejnał” is a bugle-call. The most famous one in Poland is played in Kraków every hour on the hour. It is called St. Mary’s Trumpet Call. Its origin and author are unknown, but its first written mention is from 1392.
